The Garden for the Future
The Garden for the Future The Garden for the Future By Mr.Remart A. Balingit As part of the generation who grew up with fast food and canned goods, eating right is a huge obligation. According to the Harvard School of Public Health (2015), half the content in our plates should be filled with healthy foods such as vegetables and fruits. However, due to the costs and the abundance of choices, the regulatory amount of healthy selections are often not followed. To minimize the effect of this problem, the project “Gulayan sa Pamayanan” was launched at Pasay City South High School in Partnership by the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Plant Industry last January 2022. Spearheaded by Pasay City South High School with the leadership of Mrs. Editha F. Almbuyuguen for SHS and Mr. Dominador Torio for JHS, the project was already implemented in the School with the help of the stakeholders and the barangay officials. One of the purposes of the project is to give jobs and livelihood to the communities with the use of technology such as Enriched Potting Preparation (EPP) and Simple Nutrient Addition Program (SNAP) Hydroponics. The Enriched Potting Preparation (EPP) is a way to make it easier and cheaper for people to plant in their homes using only three things: bottle, potting medium, and compost soil extract (CSE). The bottle will serve as the plant container, the potting medium will be the soil needed for plant growth, and the compost soil extract (CSE) from the compost will provide the nutrition that will cultivate the crops. This can be easily done even in a small space. On the other hand, the Simple Nutrient Addition Program (SNAP) Hydroponics is a system for vegetable production even without soil. It only needs seedlings, Styrofoam, and boxes that will speed up the process of giving the nutrition it needs. Like Enriched Potting Preparation or EPP, it only requires little space and inexpensive materials for the crops. The project can make a big difference to a community. Due to the pandemic, many people lost their jobs and became impoverished to buy their daily necessities. According to a survey released in 2021, of 1,000 people, 64% lost their jobs when the lockdown began. Through it, the quality of life of individuals and families will be improved. It will also provide a solution to the shortage of vegetables and fruits in large and urbanized cities such as Manila. It will be unnecessary and expensive to import from neighboring provinces to get nutritious food. Furthermore, the materials needed for the plan are few and affordable; Plastic bottles often found at home, Styrofoam frequently used in restaurants, and the seeds of used fruits or vegetables which can also be set aside for future crops. If the vision will be successful in places like our school, it will serve as a stepping stone that teaches the next generation the value of eating right, caring for the environment, and working together to achieve a goal. Planting together can strengthen the relationship of youth with each other because they will create a better future for themselves – a healthy and clean environment. Given that “Gulayan sa Pamayanan” will strengthen food security, provide employment, and increase the quality of life in residential areas, it is therefore easy to say that even though there are still many food choices for the next generation, they are more likely to choose the one that is best for them because it is more affordable and easier to obtain – available exclusively at their own homes.

The celebration was led by our school head, Mrs. Emilia L. Tolentino, a very strong woman and a transformational leader in her own right. She was assisted by our assistant principal, Dr. Mark Anthony F. Familiaran who has expressed his support to the great contribution of women in society particularly in the academe. The said celebration was actively participated in by the PCSHS GAD Focal Point System (GFPS) headed by the GFPS coordinator, Mrs. Salvacion Prado, the JHS Department Heads, the SHS Subject Group Heads, and the PCSHS non-teaching staff. The celebration was divided into four parts which are as follows: Part I: Flag Raising Ceremony; Part II: Launching of 2022 National Women’s Month Celebration; Part III: Morning Break; and Part IV which was the Meeting of GAD Focal Point System (GFPS). The launching of the 2022 National Women’s Month at PCSHS included the Kick-off parade which was joyfully participated in by the Gad Focal Point System members, the JHS Department Heads, and the SHS Subject Group Heads. The group was led by none other than the very hard-working PCSHS Principal Mrs. Emilia L. Tolentino, and the ever-supportive Assistant Principal, Dr. Mark Anthony F. Familiaran. The launching also included the very symbolic posting of the GAD tarpaulin at the PCSHS Main Gate, a Zumba which was led by the very energetic MAPEH teacher Mrs. Ethel S. Donesa, and of course the very inspiring messages of Mrs. Tolentino and Dr. Familiaran who both in their messages strongly recognized that women indeed could do and contribute great things to the development and improvement of the society with due respect to the opposite sex. The launching of the Women’s Celebration was facilitated by Mrs. Ginalyn Allen who acted as the program EMCEE and Mrs. Salvacion Prado, the GFPS Coordinator. This year’s launching of the International Women’s Celebration ended with a meeting that was attended by the members of the GFPS. The participants have shown their recognition of the continuing and emerging women’s empowerment and gender equality issues and concerns, challenges, and commitments.

New PSDS of Cluster 9 from PCSHS, Dr. Basilisa D. Tomimbang
New PSDS of Cluster 9 from PCSHS, Dr. Basilisa D. Tomimbang New PSDS of Cluster 9 from PCSHS, Dr. Basilisa D. Tomimbang JONALYN R. SUZARA Teacher III Previous Next “The only dreams that come true are the ones you chase, if you do nothing, you get nothing” Joseph Atser No dream is unattainable for someone who has the desire and determination to pursue and achieve her goals. Our colleague Dr. Basilisa D Tomimbang, the newly installed Public Schools District Supervisor of the Division of Pasay, is the best example of this. Dr. Basilisa D Tomimbang is a Cumlaude graduate of Pangasinan State University with a degree of Bachelor in Secondary Education major in MAPEH in 1984. She started in private school as a classroom teacher in Sacred Heart School in Paranaque from 1985 to 1989. She then moved to South Merville School Inc as Level Head from 1989 to 1993. In 1993, she began her teaching career in Pasay City South High School as Teacher I. She was promoted to Teacher II in 2006 and Teacher III in 2015. In the same year 2015, she was advanced to Master Teacher I and became Master Teacher II in less than three years. In between those years, she was able to finish a Certificate of Teaching Program in Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in General Science at Philippine Normal University under a scholarship program. She also finished her Master of Arts in Education in 2012 which made her qualified for a Master Teacher position which she got when it was opened for ranking. She was named chairman of the School-Based Management (SBM) committee as a Master teacher, a technique to enhance by moving considerable decision-making authority from the state to the district to the local school. It gives the principal, teachers, students, and parents influence over the educational process by involving them to make decisions about the school’s activities and projects. She was in charge of the data gathering and preparation for the validation of the four SBM levels of practice principles. Leadership and Governance, Curriculum and Learning, Accountability and Continuous Improvement, and Resource Management are all included in the level of Practice. The school met all of the requirements for level 3 because of the tireless work of committees involved in the collection and production of documents as means of verification, chaired by Dr. Basilisa D Tomimbang and with the support and guidance of our principal Mrs. Emilia L Tolentino. One more challenging task assigned to her is the Grade 7 ICT teacher. She has worked with Mrs. Wilma V. Amores, head of the Filipino department, and Mr. Dominador SV Torio, head of the TLE department. She was in charge of the reports on data reporting of Grade 7 learners. She had helped in mentoring and coaching her colleagues in the science department as the master teacher in the department. She was assigned to observe, coach, and mentor six science teachers, the Earth and Space group, and the Force, Matter, and Energy group. Despite all the tasks assigned to her and being a Master teacher, she managed to enroll in a Doctorate Program. She graduated recently and earned her degree as a Doctor of Philosophy. It was timely that right after she received her diploma in Doctoral of Philosophy, the item for the PSDS position in SDO Pasay was opened which she took the advantage to apply. Out of the 13 applicants from the different schools of SDO Pasay and from other divisions, she ranked third which made her obtain the position. She was installed as PSDS last January 26, 2022 and eventually designated as the PSDS of Cluster 9 composed of three schools, namely: Pasay City North High School – Tramo Campus, Pasay City West High School and Pasay City National Science High School. She assumed her new position immediately after a virtual send-off program. From being a Master teacher and classroom teacher dealing with learners she will now perform the following duties and responsibilities of a PSDS such as Instructional Supervision, Technical Assistance in School Management, Monitoring and Evaluation, Curriculum Development, Enrichment and Localization, Learning Outcomes and Assessments, Research and Technical Assistance to schools assigned to her. Indeed, success comes to those who set goals and dreams, are courageous to work hard for them, and persevere to achieve and realize that dreams come true no matter what age and status in life. “All dreams can come true If you have the courage to pursue them” – Walt Disney
